Changing Joint Account to Individual Account

Question:  An account owner is filing for divorce and wants to take his wife's name off their joint account.  Can we just strike through her name on the account agreement?

Answer:  No!  According to an Attorney General opinion, you must close the account and reopen.  Remember that there are disclosures distinguishing between individual and joint accounts.
