Government Affairs

One of the key components of any effective trade association is its level of involvement in the legislative process. IBAT has established itself as a "player" in Austin and Washington, DC, and is an effective and engaged advocate for the unique interests of community banking.  We take our responsibilities seriously, and commit substantial resources to effectively represent community banks in the legislative and regulatory arenas.

Community banks play a key role in the economic health and vitality of communities across Texas and the nation. We as an industry fund the majority of agriculture and small business loans, and provide a meaningful alternative to consumers who opt not to bank with a large or not-for-profit institution.

Your Efforts Do Make a Difference

Letters, e-mails and faxes from IBAT members, as well as our colleagues around the nation, have been instrumental in carrying the community bank message to the FDIC and Congress.

IBAT would like to thank the following members of the Texas Republican Congressional Delegation for their joint letter to Chairman Sheila Bair of the FDIC in regard to the impact of the proposed 20-basis-points FDIC Special Assessment.  We appreciate the acknowledgment from our Texas congressmen that the vast majority of Texas’ community banks neither created nor participated in the risky and imprudent lending practices of mega-banks that have led to the erosion of the FDIC fund.
