IBAT's Bottom Line July 27, 2009

IBAT Executive Committee Traveling to Washington DC
This week your IBAT Executive committee and staff will be in Washington DC to visit with the Texas Congressional delegation on key aspects of the Obama administration's regulatory reform proposal. Two issues will be front and center in our discussions…our disdain for another potential bank regulator in the form of the Consumer Financial Protection Agency and our desire to permanently change the FDIC regular assessment base to an asset based assessment in lieu of domestic deposits.
There has been much progress made by the industry on these two fronts. But much work is still needed. Your Congressional representatives will be home for the month long August recess beginning next week. This will afford you the opportunity to vist with them first hand that community banks should be exempted from any new regulatory scheme designed to create additional regulatory burden which will translate in increased confusion and costs to bank customers.
You can bet the consumer advocate groups will be very active in making their feelings known during the recess. We must be equally if not more active.
Key talking points, developed by the ICBA may be found here on both issues:

As always, let us know how we can assist you in your efforts.

The IBAT Steak Out Needs YOU!
Last year, we created the IBAT Steak Out in lieu of the traditional IBAT Chuck Wagon dinner auctioned to raise funds for the IBAT PAC. When Hurricane Ike slammed the Texas coast immediately prior to our Annual Convention, a decision was made to divert the funds raised from this effort to members of our IBAT family who had been devastated by the hurricane.Once again this year, 100 of our bankers will have the opportunity to purchase a $250 ticket and then go in a drawing for the IBAT Steak Out, with all funds benefiting the IBAT PAC! Same great food for 100 of your special guests prepared by your IBAT Staff at a location of your choice. What a great opportunity for only $250! Click here for all of the details. What a treat for your staff, directors and customers and you get to be the HERO!
So, you can’t attend convention? No worries. Just click here to purchase your ticket and we’ll e-mail you your ticket number and notify you if you’re the winner. The winning ticket will be drawn immediately following the PAC Live Auction on Monday, October 12.
Because all funds benefit the PAC, we can accept only personal checks or credit cards. Don’t be left out of the fun…buy your ticket or tickets today!
AustinMoneyShow.com
The Austin Money $how is one of IBAT's new initiatives to tell the positive, proactive story of community bankers. On September 25-26, the IBAT Education Foundation is hosting a new kind of fundraiser to support its mission. The Austin Money $how is a pilot program for consumers in Central Texas who are active, educated, homeowners, have one or more children and interested in better ways to manage their finances. This audience is asking many more questions since the economy turned upside down. This audience wants to know more about their investments in 401(k) plans, IRA's, how to better work with their local banker to maximize their money. IBAT is taking the story to the consumer with 33 workshops and 80 booths. Click here to learn more: www.austinmoneyshow.com

Meet the IBAT Staff
As IBAT celebrates our 35th Anniversary this year, we wanted to introduce you to our staff.
Many of the staff you know already and some that you may not be as
familiar with. IBAT really is a family. We laugh together…we cry
together…we get on each other’s nerves. But at the end of the day, we
can always count on each other. The IBAT family has 226 years of combined experience with the association. We recently asked the staff to complete a fun questionnaire to give you a chance to get to know them better. From now until the Annual IBAT Convention, we’ll be featuring them on the IBAT website. Enjoy and welcome to our home.

TechMecca Seeks Your Input
Plans are currently underway for TechMecca 2010 and IBAT is looking for eager participants to make their voices heard by providing valuable experience and expectation information. A quick survey has been composed to let IBAT know how to best meet participants’ technology and related marketing needs for this conference. The results will be compiled and used to evaluate what types of educational sessions you would most like to see.
The survey takes only a few minutes, and may be found here. Questions pertaining to speakers and possible sessions you would like to see are asked with the chance to provide your own ideas for submission.
Do you have a “Rock Star” on your staff when it comes to areas related to dealing with the how to’s or challenges of technology? Do they like to speak and are they willing to provide information while learning from others? If so, this is precisely the type of response we need to hear.
TechMecca 2010 will take place Jan. 25-26, 2010, at the Renaissance Austin Hotel at the Arboretum. Information and registration options will be added to the IBAT website and the TechMecca website as the conference draws closer. Please do not hesitate to email Julie Courtney if you have any questions or concerns.
Baker Market Update
Last Tuesday, Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke gave his semiannual address to Congress regarding the Fed’s monetary policy. Bernanke clearly communicated to both Congress and the financial markets (through an Op-Ed piece in the Wall Street Journal) that deflation is still the main focus, but that the Fed is well prepared to unwind the extremely accommodative polices when appropriate. As such, both the stock market and Treasury market rallied on Tuesday following the Fed Chairman’s comments. Read more in the Baker Market Update.
