NewsHearings Set on Proposed Consumer Protection Agency

They're back!  Members return to both chambers of Congress today after a rocky, unsettling August recess full of spirited town hall meetings on the national health care issue.  While it was difficult to get anyone's attention on many other issues facing lawmakers, IBAT and many members used the time to meet with many of our Texas Congressional delegation in live or phone meetings to discuss regulatory restructuring and regulatory reform.

We continued to convey our deep concerns about the creation of the proposed Consumer Financial Protection Agency (HR 3126) and our strong support for (HR 2897) to permanently change the FDIC assessment base to assets from deposits.  Chairman Frank has already scheduled hearings on HR 3126 and is expected to move legislation very soon.  IBAT and ICBA continues to advocate that any new agency should not have jurisdiction over federally insured, regulated financial instituions… rather, the focus of the legislation should be on non-regulated financial entities.

Stay tuned for further developments, and thanks to all who arranged meetings on our behalf with your elected representatives.

Political Potpourri
The Big 12 Governor’s Race

According to our very unofficial and unscientific poll of our readers from last week, it appears that the race between Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison and Governor Rick Perry is shaping up to be a very close primary.

Of course, these are not the only two candidates for governor of our great state.  Debra Medina, a nurse and businesswoman from South Texas, has also entered the fray on the Republican side receiving the endorsement of Cong. Ron Paul.

On the Democratic side, Tom Schieffer was the first to toss his hat in the ring.  Although he was a partner in the Texas Rangers baseball team with former President George W. Bush, as well as a Bush-appointed ambassador, he has picked up endorsements from some Democratic heavyweights in the Texas House of Representatives.

An independent candidate for Governor during the last election, Hill Country novelist Kinky Friedman has decided to make the race again, this time as a Democrat.  Even if he doesn’t win, he’s getting publicity for his new book “Heroes of a Texas Childhood”.

There are a couple of other Democratic candidates who would like to move into the Governor’s Mansion, among them Hank Gilbert, a rancher who lost to Todd Staples in the 2006 race for Texas Agriculture Commissioner.  Another “let’s try one more time” candidate is Mark Thompson, who made an unsuccessful bid for the Texas Railroad commission in 2008.

So, settle in folks.  It’s going to be bumpy ride to the March Primary.

On the Education Front

sales cultureHow To Create & Maintain a Sales Culture in a Community Bank
October 27-28, 2009
Dallas, TX

Are you attempting to make management decisions regarding the initial setup of a sales environment or improving an existing one, then this seminar is a MUST.

One of the most frequent comments we receive from attendees of this class is “I wish my CEO was here.”  So often, as the CEO, we ask someone to attend a seminar and then return to the bank and sum up the seminar to us.  Often that is exactly what we should do.  However, with this seminar, we strongly suggest that you attend yourself with at least one or more people.

As the CEO, when it comes to sales, your motives, your perspective, and your goals are very different than that of your employees.  You need to directly receive this information and be able to evaluate it from your unique perspective as the manager of your bank.

If you are serious about creating a successful sales culture, or repairing a broken one, we strongly suggest that you attend.  In addition, bring others with you so that after the seminar you can discuss with them how to uniquely apply what you have learned to your own bank.

It is clearly time for bank boards to step up and help guide their financial institutions back to profitability.

Bank Director magazine and American Banker are joining forces to provide a roadmap for directors of financial institutions by presenting America's Bank Board Symposium, a unique event that will provide bank directors with the knowledge they need to develop, implement, and monitor sound strategies for their institutions, and provide them the tools they need to fulfill their fiduciary duties to their bank shareholders.

Meet the IBAT Staff

MBAs IBAT celebrates our 35th Anniversary this year, we wanted to introduce you to our staff. Many of the staff you know already and some that you may not be as familiar with. IBAT really is a family. We laugh together…we cry together…we get on each other’s nerves. But at the end of the day, we can always count on each other.

The IBAT family has 226 years of combined experience with the association. We recently asked the staff to complete a fun questionnaire to give you a chance to get to know them better. From now until the Annual IBAT Convention, we’ll be featuring them on the IBAT website. Enjoy and welcome to our home.
