Life From The End of the Bench

Printer-friendly VersionPrinter-friendly VersionJoin us for an inspiring message of teamwork, perseverance and faith from former Wake Forest University basketball player Alan Williams as he closes the 2009 Leadership Conference.  Williams’ message is titled “Fighting for Something Greater Than Self – Exploring the Humility It takes To Serve Other People In A ‘Me Centered’ World.”  He will be speaking at the conference at 9:30am on Saturday morning in the closing General Session.

Alan Williams is the author of “Walk-on: Life From The End Of The Bench,” a true story drawn from his experiences as a bench player for the Wake Forest University Deacons basketball team.

Though he wore the jersey for Wake Forest, Alan Williams’ experiences on the hardwood for the Deacons were not anything like he pictured as a little kid shooting baskets in the backyard.  In 120 games the undersized shooting guard played a total of 59 minutes.  He was a walk-on, and at many points along the journey he contemplated quitting.  But his struggles in being ‘the guy who that never played’ led to an understanding of the true purpose of life’s tests, and new definitions of victory.

Williams is the founder of Teammates First, an organization founded to rediscover the significance to being a part of a team.  Dick Vitale of ESPN/ABC Sports says, “We need more Alan Willamses.  He redefines success and tells us all what being on a team is all about – don’t miss this touching story – it’s awesome, baby!”
