Texas community bankers and IBAT staff have just returned from a very successful visit to our nation's Capitol. Twenty-seven of the thirty-four members of the Texas Congressional delegation were contacted. Our message focused on three primary issues:
1. Co-sponsor or support HR 698, the Gillmor/Frank bill which would permanently close the ILC loophole and forever prohibit commercial firms (like Wal Mart and others) from owning a bank and obtaining FDIC insurance coverage.
2. Second, co-sponsor HR 1869, the ICBA/IBAT led Communities First Act which would provide much needed regulatory relief and targeted tax credits for community banks.
3. Finally, we urged members to reject any measure which would expand the powers of the Farm Credit System and/or credit unions. You can help this process immensely by calling your Congressman's office in Washington and reinforcing the messages outlined above. |

| BAKER WEEKLY |

The Commerce Department released the first of three growth estimates for first quarter 2007 GDP. This preliminary report fell short of economists’ expectations. The 1.3% growth versus an expected 1.8%, coupled with a 2.2% increase in the core personal consumption expenditure rate indicated that the economy is now more reliant on consumer spending...Read more in this week's Baker Weekly.

Don't Miss this Year's IBAT Leadership Conference! Early Bird Cut-Off 5/11!
What others have said... "I highly recommend attending the Leadership Conference not only for the education and excellent speakers but also for the networking. Not only do you bring back to your bank the knowledge you gained from the speakers but also some ideas you get from visiting with the other bankers. What you bring back to your bank is way more valuable than what it costs for you to attend."
"I attend the IBAT Leadership Conference because it gives me a great deal of satisfaction knowing that I am contributing to an organization that represents our community banks in Texas. IBAT does a great job in representing us on so many fronts and therefore enhances the community banking business all across Texas."
"The Leadership Conference provides bankers with training in a relaxed setting and their families a chance to make lasting friendships with other banking families. Being a part of the Leadership Conference provides many rewards!"
