October 3, 2006 - Corpus Christi banking executive Al Jones has been selected to chair the nation’s largest community banking organization for the next year. Jones, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of American Bank and President of American Bank Holding Company, was elected to lead the Independent Bankers Association of Texas (IBAT) for the 2006-2007 term.
The organization, representing more than 2,000 Texas community banks and branches, elected Jones to its highest post during the 32nd annual convention in San Antonio.
Joining Jones as officers of the organization are Chairman-Elect Cliff McCauley of Frost National Bank in San Antonio, Vice Chairman Milton McGee of Citizens National Bank in Henderson and Secretary-Treasurer Jimmy Rasmussen of HomeTown Bank in Galveston.
“This is just another step in a long ladder of successes for Al and we are very fortunate to have him at the IBAT helm,” IBAT President/CEO Chris Williston said after the election. “Banking has always been in his blood and his integrity and dedication to his customers and community have prepared him for this new role.”
Jones began his banking career in 1963 as a part-time bank employee while a student at The University of Texas at Austin. He was hired as the Cashier of American Bank when it first opened for business in 1970. He became President in 1985 and Chairman in 2005.
He has served in leadership positions in numerous professional and civic organizations over the years. Currently, Jones serves on the Board of Directors of Christus Spohn Hospital, Spohn Investment Corporation, Corpus Christi Economic Development Corporation, Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi Foundation, Art Museum of South Texas and the Governor’s Business Council.
Recent involvement includes serving as Chairman of the Corpus Christi Chamber of Commerce, Corpus Christi Convention and Visitors Bureau, Community Progress Partnership, Corpus Christi Business Alliance and Leadership Corpus Christi and Director of the YMCA, the USS Lexington Museum, South Texas Public Broadcasting and the Trust Company.
He is married to Janet, his wife of 40 years. Their daughter Allison Jones Webster is married to Dr. Robert Webster and they have two children, Elizabeth and George.
