Dick Hendee, who earned the respect of community bankers across the state through his professional role administering college student loan programs through LoanStar/Nelnet, was presented the highly coveted President’s Award during the 33rd annual convention of the Independent Bankers Association of Texas (IBAT).
The Katy, Texas resident joins a very select group of financial leaders and friends of community banking in receiving the honor. It is presented to an IBAT member who has gone “above and beyond” in service to the industry and community. The selection is at the sole discretion of the IBAT President.
Hendee began his banking career in 1966 at a small community bank in upstate New York. He joined the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency as a national bank examiner in 1973 and continued a sterling financial climb to his role as Sr. Vice-President and Strategic Planning, as well as special assistant to the President at LoanStar/Nelnet, heading up national marketing.
“Dick has always been a credit to our industry,” IBAT President Chris Williston said in making the announcement. “His community, civic and banking activities reflect the role expected of independent banking.”
Hendee has been active in the MIT Entrepreneur Institute, Houston Committee of Private Sector Initiatives, Houston Bankers Association, Houston Housing Partnership, Neighborhood Reinvestment Corporation and Sam Houston State University’s President’s Circle.
Statewide activities include the Texas Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators, Association of Texas Lenders for Education, Texas Association of College Admissions Counselors, Texas Conference on Small Business and the State Bar of Texas.
“Within our organization, he has immersed himself in IBAT conferences and summits, been active in our Washington D.C. legislative visits and was instrumental in establishing the IBAT Associate Member Task Force,” Williston said. Dick Hendee truly is a leader among leaders and I’m proud to present him with the President’s Award.”
