Calling for Banker Volunteers to Teach |

Call to Action
Please note: Given the nature of this collaboration among the banking associations, you may receive this message more than once. It is only necessary to respond once. Your feedback will be captured and counted. Many thanks.
Background
Thank you for the overwhelmingly positive response to the recent banker survey on financial literacy efforts in Texas, cosponsored by the Texas Department of Banking, the IBAT Education Foundation, and the Texas Bankers Foundation. One direct outcome of that survey was the show of support by bankers to volunteer in local schools and teach financial literacy. As we move into the Fall Semester, we are working with the 26 Junior Achievement Chapters across Texas to increase the teaching of personal financial education skills. This educational outreach has received CRA recognition by both the FDIC and the OCC. In addition, the JA curricula is accepted by the Texas Education Agency as one of the resources that meet the state mandate for financial education at the high school level.
We continue to be impressed by the work of Junior Achievement in Texas and its proven programs for K-12th grade. Independent studies have substantiated that the JA practical curriculum has impressive pre and post testing results.
What does the banker’s commitment require? Volunteers will go to a local class for up to one hour per week for 5 to 8 weeks, depending on the grade level you choose. You may choose to sign up with a buddy to team teach or swap out weeks. Junior Achievement supplies the training, the lessons & materials and access to the classroom. The banker supplies the time and knowledge.
If your bank has an existing relationship with your local JA Chapter, we commend you for your proactive service. This effort is not intended to displace but to add support to what you have in place. In fact, we are very interested and would like to know which bankers among us already have working relationships with JA. The attached survey provides place for your input.
